Berlin, 23. February 2022 – Commenting on the "Data Act" presented today by the EU Commission, Marc Fliehe, Head of Digitalization at the TÜV Association, says:
"The Data Act aims to facilitate data sharing, access and fair use between companies. As such, it provides companies with important guidance on the use of data in the B2B sector. The TÜV Association supports this goal and welcomes the EU Commission's horizontal approach."
"When developing AI applications, the quality and quantity of training data determines the safety of the end product. The Data Act simplifies access to correspondingly high-quality data. For the training of algorithms, this is crucial. Especially for AI applications with high risk potential, the quality of the data is relevant: Here, clear quality criteria for the data must be defined and adhered to."
The TÜV Association sees a particular need for improvement in the mobility sector. Richard Goebelt, Head of Vehicle and Mobility at the TÜV Association, says: "In the mobility sector, the Data Act falls short, especially when it comes to the exchange of vehicle data. So far, there are no rules on how public authorities or testing organizations can gain access to vehicle data in order to carry out their sovereign tasks for road safety and environmental and climate protection. Corresponding regulations must now be quickly anchored in the sector-specific legislation for the type approval of vehicles in the EU."
